‘Excision' explores the cultural practice of FGM/C (female genital mutilation/cutting) in Senegal and a new change in perspective leading to an end of the practice in various parts of the country. The project includes images taken in Dakar as well as the Casamance region, where the social norm of FGM/C is slowly being abandoned. The project captures the complexities of the women's environment through a simplistic use of light and colour, attempting to focus on the strength the women possess in their femininity but also the complex social structures that confront the women when engaging with the subject.
